Police have arrested a man on suspicion of child abduction involving a nine-year-old girl in Huddersfield.

The girl, who is related to the man, was driven more than 140 miles away from her home before she was found by police officers who had traced the car she was travelling in.

And detectives revealed technology helped them track down the suspect and the child.

Concern was raised for her welfare after she was last seen at an address in the Brackenhall area of Huddersfield at 7pm on Tuesday night.

The girl has since been reunited with her family and being interviewed by specially-trained officers.

Det Insp Ian Thornes from Huddersfield CID, said: “A 30-year-old local man remains in police custody after being arrested in connection with an allegation of child abduction.

“This followed a report of a relative taking a nine-year-old girl without consent shortly before 7pm on Tuesday night from outside a property on Bracken Grove, Huddersfield.

“Following work with automated number plate recognition technology, a car linked to the incident was stopped near to Milton Keynes around 9.30pm on that night.

“The nine-year-old child was found safe and well in the vehicle and a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child abduction.

“The man has been brought back to West Yorkshire where he remains in police custody.”
