A man was punched in the face and robbed in Huddersfield town centre in the early hours of this morning.

The victim, a 61-year-old man, had been drinking and left a pub in the Beast Market at around 1.20am.

He walked through the town centre and noticed he was being followed by a man and a woman as he walked in Cloth Hall Street.

As he was walking along Market Street towards the Civic Centre he decided to not take the subway below the ring road because the pair were following him.

But as he approached a grassy verge to the side of Castlegate he was approached and asked for a cigarette.

He told the man he did not have any left but he was then punched in the face.

He was punched a number of times and a struggle broke out before a woman then started kicking his legs and he fell to the floor.

Once on the ground the man held him down whilst the woman then searched him and removed a wrist watch.

The victim managed to flag down a passing lorry and he phoned police. He was shaken and suffered bruising but did not go to hospital.

Det Inspr Mark Truelove, of Huddersfield CID said: “This is a nasty attack on a man as he was walking home after a night out drinking.

“Fortunately the man’s injuries were not serious but could have been a lot worse, particularly when he was punched in the face and when he subsequently was knocked to the floor.

“The victim managed to flag down a passing wagon and alerted police.

“Enquiries have resulted in a 25-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman being arrested and remain in custody”.
