A man caught hiding a bottle of whisky down his trousers has escaped punishment.

Tyrone Letremy admitted taking the bottle of Jack Daniel’s from Tesco in Huddersfield town centre.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the theft at the Viaduct Street branch occurred on June 14.

A member of the public alerted a member of store staff after spotting the 31-year-old stuffing the drink down his trousers.

He was challenged but claimed he had nothing on him and tried to run towards the exit before being caught.

Zara Begum, mitigating, said that her client had been through a chaotic few months.

She told magistrates that his temporary work contract had ended and he had become homeless.

Miss Begum added that Letremy, of Union Street in Heckmondwike, had been taking drugs and couldn’t remember the shoplifting incident.

Magistrates gave him a 12-month conditional discharge.

He still has to pay £20 victim surcharge.
