A man has appeared in court accused of kicking a Jack Russell dog following a row with his neighbour.

Ashley Gill, 47, faces charges of threatening behaviour and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the alleged offences took place on July 10 at Falcon Street in Newsome.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that Anne Cartwright was standing outside her flat with her pet when she was approached by Gill.

Mr Bozman said that he told her he’d had enough of the dog before kicking it under the chin, causing it to cry out in pain.

He told magistrates that Gill then retrieved a pick axe handle from his home.

Mr Bozman said that Gill raised this in the direction of Ms Cartwright’s son before hitting another dog with it,.

Gill, currently of no fixed address, denies the charges.

Magistrates told him that his trial will take place on January 17.

He was banned from contacting named prosecution witnesses or going to the Newsome address until then.
