A MAN was given a community order after stealing from a Huddersfield supermarket.

Richard Baimbridge, of Elizabeth Street in Elland, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted stealing a Dyson vacuum cleaner and food worth £310 from Sainsbury’s on October 21.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said that Baimbridge was seen entering the Southgate store with another male.

He selected items from around the store and went to the self-service checkout.

The pair scanned the items and Baimbridge put his card in the payment machine.

The card was declined four times but the 25-year-old and the male still left the store with the goods.

Baimbridge was then detained by store staff until police arrived.

He claimed that he had been going through a difficult period in his life.

His relationship with his long-term partner ended and he had turned to drink, he said.

Baimbridge admitted that he stole from the store to try and fund his drinking.

Magistrates gave him a community order for 12 months with 60 hours of unpaid work.

They also ordered him to pay £155 towards compensation for the goods taken.
