A man has appeared in court accused of making hoax bomb calls to police which led to a biscuit factory being evacuated twice.

Irfan Liaqat, 27, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He faces two charges of giving police false information that there was a bomb at Batley-based Fox’s Biscuits.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said that the first charge related to November 9 last year.

She told the Huddersfield bench that on that date a call was made by a male to police.

The prosecutor said that the male stated that bombs were due to go off at the Wellington Street factory at 2.30pm, 6pm and 9pm.

Mrs Fowler told magistrates that as a result of these claims police evacuated the premises and conducted a search.

She said that a similar incident occurred again three days later on November 12, resulting in the factory being evacuated again.

Magistrates heard that £36,000 worth of business was lost as a result of both disruptions.

Liaqat, of Albion Court in Heckmondwike, gave no indication as to what his plea to the charges will be.

Magistrates committed the case to Leeds Crown Court.

Liaqat will first appear there for a plea and directions hearing on July 26.

Unconditional bail was granted.
