A RECOVERING cancer patient died after tripping down his stairs, an inquest heard.

Matthew Grendon, 63, was found dead in his Golcar home by his two daughters.

The inquest heard how Mr Grendon had taken early retirement in 1993 due to ill health from David Brown's in Huddersfield.

Mr Grendon, who lived alone,

was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had the cancer removed in May and was on medication.

The inquest heard that on August 4 Mr Grendon had a fall getting out of a minibus, hitting his head on a pavement.

He was taken to hospital. He was confused and struggled to speak and was put on a course of steriods.

Then on September 1, his daughter Jaqueline visited him and found him naked and confused.

She believed he had fallen over and he had a minor nose injury.

The following day she rang him and when he failed to reply she went round with sister.

He was lying at the bottom of the stairs, dead.

Deputy coroner Mark Hinchliffe said the pathologist revealed Mr Grendon had suffered significant bleeding to the brain caused by bruising.

He said he did not know what caused him to fall and recorded a verdict of accidental death.
