A man has died after being struck by a train in Dewsbury this morning.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman confirmed the tragedy, which happened at 8.20am.

It meant delays on the rail network this morning. Rail line re-opened at 9.40am but delays are expected throughout the morning.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "BTP officers attended Dewsbury Railway station on Wednesday to a report of a body struck by a train.

"Officers from BTP attended the incident which was reported to police at 8.20am and is currently being treated as non suspicious.

"Paramedics attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

The incident, in the Dewsbury area, is ongoing and it has seen trains between Leeds, Dewsbury and Huddersfield cancelled.

Rail operator First TransPennine Express say: "Owing to emergency services dealing with an incident at Dewsbury all lines are blocked. "

It is affecting trains at Morley, Batley, Dewsbury, Mirfield and Brighouse and Huddersfield.
