Detectives have appealed for information after a man was found collapsed in the street with head injuries.

Police were called to a tunnel off Lowergate, Milnsbridge, at 1.15am on Sunday after a passer-by found the man unconscious.

The man, believed to be local and in his late 20s, had suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital.

Detectives are treating his injuries as “unexplained” until they have been able to interview him at length.

He was said to be in a “stable” condition in hospital.

Police taped off the scene on Sunday morning and a forensic examination took place.

Det Sgt Peter Usher, of Kirklees CID, said officers were keeping an open mind about what happened but it could be the injuries had been caused by a fall.

He added: “We are currently investigating what led up to the discovery of this man in the street but at this time his injuries are unexplained.”

Det Sgt Usher appealed for anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious in the Lowergate, Bankhouse Lane or Hope Street area of Milnsbridge to contact Kirklees CID via 101.
