A MAN has been found badly hurt and unconscious in a street.

Police found him on Southgate in the centre of Elland at 12.40am yesterday, suffering from head injuries.

He was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, then transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he had emergency surgery.

He is said to be in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 26-year- old woman and a man aged 40 - both from Elland - in connection with the incident. They are being questioned.

Det Insp John Mountain, of Calderdale Police, said: "The man's injuries are consistent with an assault.

"Inquiries are continuing to trace other people involved."
