A man who stole two Tablets and an Ipad because he thought “his family deserved” them, has been jailed.

Mohammed Ishfaq, a 34-year-old father-of-four, of Heron Close, Ravensthorpe, was sentenced at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He has been unable to work since he was knocked down by a police vehicle two years ago.

Prosecutor, Vanessa Jones, said he stole the two Samsung Galaxy Tablets and Apple Ipad worth £657 at an Asda supermarket on September 2. All goods were recovered.

He pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing.

He also faced being in breach of a suspended sentence imposed for driving while disqualified.

In mitigation, Aftaab Hussain said the defendant stopped at Asda on the way back from school with the intention of buying food.

He said: “Due to his financial situation he can’t buy the goods he thinks his family deserves.

“He is deeply ashamed. He now realises that this is not the right way.”

He added that following a traffic accident in 2013 when he was hit by a police vehicle he suffered physical and psychological problems which had left him unable to work.

Chairman of the bench, Margaret Atkinson, jailed him for a total of 12 weeks.

On his release from prison he will be supervised by the Probation Service for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £260 court costs by January 9, 2016.
