A MAN has lost a leg in a horror accident at a Kirklees train station.

The man in his late 70s - who police were this morning still trying to identify - was spotted at the station at around 4.45am today.

He was sitting on the platform dangling his legs over the side when he was hit by the Newcastle to Manchester Airport Transpennine Express.

Police were alerted and the force helicopter swooped low overhead to support officers on the ground.

They discovered the man lying next to the track.

The man was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital, where he is stable. He has had part of one leg amputated.

A police spokesman said: "We are not sure what has happened yet and the investigation is ongoing.

"It is at an early stage."
