A MAN in his 40s was taken to hospital after a dramatic crash in Elland.

The incident happened at around 2pm when a Nissan Micra crashed into the central reservation on the Elland bypass.

Police had to shut the road and long queues of traffic built up.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene which was on the A629 near Exley Lane, Elland.

Crew Commander at Elland Fire Station, Andrew Wood, said: “The casualty was trapped in his vehicle so we worked with the paramedics to assist in releasing him from the wreckage.

“We removed the roof of the vehicle which had become lodged in the central reservation.”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance landed but a doctor on scene assessed the casualty, who is believed to be in his 40s, and he was taken by road ambulance to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Police closed the road between Ainley Top and Elland to allow emergency services to access the scene.

The crash caused long delays in the area and bus services were diverted for a few hours while the vehicle was recovered.
