Police officers stood guard outside a house in Huddersfield awaiting a search warrant after detecting the smell of cannabis while out on foot patrol.

The officers had knocked on the door of the house in Goldington Avenue in Oakes but got no response although they could see men inside looking at a laptop.

But before the warrant arrived a number of men ran out of the front door including Tien Hoang who was caught a few doors away, James Lake prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court today.

When the house was searched over five kilogrammes of skunk cannabis with a street value of around £47,000 was found drying out on a bedroom floor.

Mr Lake said Hoang told officers someone had brought the cannabis to the property for him to do that for them.

Hoang, 45, was jailed for 26 weeks after admitting possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Judge James Spencer QC told him through a Vietnamese interpreter that in view of the time spent on remand since his arrest on February 26 “you will be available for deportation almost immediately.”
