A man has been jailed for attacking a Dewsbury pub landlord who tried to get him to leave because he was already barred from the premises.

Dale Laycock had been banned from the Royal Hotel because of “repeated, violent drunken behaviour” Jonathan Sharp prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court on Friday.

But on the evening of May 18 last year he went into the pub when he was drunk and was twice told to leave by the landlord Gary Ryan.

On the second time he was being ushered out when he turned violent, punching Mr Ryan eight times and head-butting him three times causing him lumps, bruises and a split lip.

The police were called and he was arrested. Laycock was then on bail in May this year when he sent abusive text messages to his on/off girlfriend.

He then went round to her home on May 14 when she was out and “delivered a donkey kick that put the door in,” said Mr Sharp.

Felicity Hemlin representing Laycock said he was drunk at the time of the assault and accepted his behaviour was unacceptable. “He clearly has a problem with alcohol.”

She said since being on remand in custody for the first time he had considered his life and was motivated to change and work with the probation on his alcohol and domestic violence issues.

Laycock, 24 of Sackville Street, Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury admitted assault causing actual bodily harm to Mr Ryan, sending malicious communications, damage and an earlier offence of handling stolen goods.

Jailing him for a total of 20 months, Judge James Spencer QC said the assault on the landlord was serious particularly as he knew he was not welcome at the premises.
