A man was left unconscious and needing stitches to his eye after being assaulted at a Huddersfield nightspot.

Imran Choudhry was knocked to the floor during the unprovoked attack at Mavericks 80’s Lounge on September 13.

Liam McLaughlin was found guilty of common assault following a trial.

His solicitor Carl Kingsley explained that a brain injury sustained in a road accident two years ago had affected his behaviour.

The incident at the King Street bar happened as Mr Choudhry was enjoying a night out with friends.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said: “He was struck without reason or warning to his right eye. The force of the blow caused him to fall over and he briefly lost consciousness.”

McLaughlin, of Greenwood Street in Primrose Hill, also pleaded guilty to a charge of racially-aggravated threatening behaviour.

Magistrates heard that police were called to the railway station at 5am on October 24 to remove McLaughlin.

Mr Bozman said: “They found him asleep near the main entrance and when they woke him up he became aggressive.

“He tried to lash out and was shouting ‘f*****g n*****s’.

“There was an Afro-Caribbean family close to where he was being arrested and that aggravated his behaviour.”

Mr Kingsley explained that McLaughlin was the passenger in a car involved in a road accident in 2014.

He was in intensive care for some months and suffered severe brain damage.

Magistrates sentenced McLaughlin to a 12-month community order with 30 days of rehabilitation activities and a curfew for four weeks.

He must pay Mr Choudhry £100 compensation as well as £100 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
