An 83-year-old man is in a critical condition after he suffered a suspected heart attack in the pool at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

The alarm was raised at 7.45am today when the man collapsed. He was pulled from the water by staff and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

He was said to be in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

His family have been informed.

The pool was closed for most of the morning but has since reopened.

A spokesman for Kirklees Active Leisure said: "The pool has now been re-opened and all procedures and protocol have been followed following the incident. "We would like to thank our staff for their speed and professionalism and wish the man a speedy recovery."

Police said the incident was a "medical episode" and there were no suspicious circumstances.
