A MAN stole baby outfits from a store to buy drugs, a court heard.

Darren Nelson had stayed out of trouble for eight years after kicking his heroin habit.

But he started stealing again after succumbing to his old addiction.

The 40-year-old was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

The Huddersfield bench was told that he entered Matalan in Dewsbury on April 9.

He was witnessed by staff putting the two tiny outfits – worth £18 – up his jumper.

He was stopped and searched. The items were recovered and police were called.

In interview Nelson, of Cemetery Road in Dewsbury, said that he would have sold the clothing for half the price to buy drugs.

Alex Bosman, prosecuting, said that he hadn’t offended for eight years but had a lot of old offences on his record.

The bench was told that this had been because Nelson had stopped using heroin this time and got his life back on track.

But he found himself in the old offending pattern after he started using again.

Magistrates gave Nelson a community order for six months, including a drug rehabilitation requirement.
