A Polish man stole cosmetics from a shop in Huddersfield the day after he was released from prison for shoplifting, a court heard.

Piotr Boguslav, 47, of no fixed abode, appeared before magistrates in Huddersfield yesterday charged with theft from Wilkinson in New Street on October 3.

The court heard he walked into the store and concealed two deodorants, face cream and wet wipes in his jacket then left without paying.

He was stopped by in-store security and police were called.

Boguslav, who listened via a Polish interpreter, pleaded guilty to theft of items worth �13.08.

The bench at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard the defendant had 18 similar offences on his record and most recently had been jailed for 20 weeks by Trafford Magistrates in Manchester. He was released on October 2.

In mitigation the court heard the defendant was homeless and was battling with alcoholic addition. He had been drunk when he carried out the offence.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report and remanded him in custody until the case is next heard at Huddersfield on October 18.
