A MAN was trapped after an accident involving a car which had been followed by police.

Firefighters had to free the man, who was trapped under a Nissan Micra.

It was hit by a Ford Orion being followed by the police and flipped over.

The man, a taxi driver, had been taking items from the boot of his own car in Grimscar Road, Birkby, when the accident happened just after 3.50am today.

A police patrol car had been following a man and a woman in the red Ford Orion in Grimscar Road.

Police said the Orion picked up speed and officers put on the police car's blue flashing lights to follow it.

But officers then decided it was unsafe to continue.

The Orion hit the parked Nissan, causing it to overturn and hit the taxi driver as he was taking something from his car boot.

Huddersfield firefighters quickly freed him, and he was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with a broken leg.

The driver of the Orion was thrown from the vehicle and taken to the Infirmary with a mouth injury. The woman passenger was also treated there.

Neither is thought to have serious injuries.
