A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said a man was driving along Westgate, in Huddersfield town centre, at around 5.30pm when he saw smoke coming from the bonnet of his Jaguar X-type two litre diesel car.

He pulled over and called the fire service. Firefighters arrived and put the fire out with a hose.

The spokesman said the crew saw powder on the floor, suggesting a extinguisher had been used, but were unaware of the man who had tried to put out the flames.

Westgate was not closed during the incident, but the fire did cause traffic to build up during rush hour.

No one was hurt and the road is now clear. At around 6.30pm the car was still in Westgate waiting to recovered.
