TWENTY-nine properties were left without power for several hours after a fault in a link box occurred in the pavement outside the Lidl supermarket in Wakefield Road.

A Huddersfield fire crew was despatched to the scene at 2am after reports of acrid smoke underneath a single manhole cover.

Crew commander, Scott Belvidge, said: "There were flames for a short while and a lot of smoke. The area was cordoned off while we tried to make it safe."

A Northern Powergrid spokesman said the power was due to be restored around lunchtime today.
