A NEW cycling map and guide for the Spen Valley and North Kirklees area has been launched by Kirklees Council.

The map shows the network of existing and proposed cycle routes and facilities in North Kirklees including the Spen Valley, Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton and Birstall.

It is free and is available from Kirklees Information Points, tourist information centres, bike shops, libraries, sports centres or by ringing ROSS - the Kirklees Street Care freephone number 0800 731 8765.

As well as showing routes, the guide provides information on local bike shops and cycling clubs, using public rights of way, and explains road signs and road-lining for cyclists.

It also outlines the health benefits of cycling and cycling and lists contacts at Kirklees Council.

The map and guide is one of a series of three covering the whole of Kirklees. A revised and improved second edition of the Central Kirklees Cycling Map and Guide has also just been launched and it covers Huddersfield, Mirfield, Heckmondwike and Dewsbury. It is also available free.

Local cyclist Amanda Seymour, of Birstall, thought the map and guide was a great idea.

"I love cycling with my daughter. Kirklees provides so many great ways to explore the area. I'm sure this leaflet will be a useful guide for any family," she added.

Local cyclists are being encouraged to comment on the map and routes so that the council can improve the network in the future.
