THE case of a Huddersfield man charged with a double murder in Ireland has been adjourned for another week so legal issues that have arisen during the trial can be sorted out.

Mark Nash, 42, who grew up in Bradley before moving to Ireland in 1996, denies the murder of Sylvia Shields, 60, and Mary Callanan, 61, in 1997.

The mutilated bodies of Ms Shields and Ms Callanan were discovered in sheltered accommodation in a house attached to St Brendan’s Psychiatric Hospital in Grangegorman, Dublin, on March 7, 1997.

The jury at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court was told at the start of the trial that Nash, who attended All Saints College in Bradley, had confessed to Irish police – the Gardaí – that he had carried out the murders, but subsequently withdrew those admissions.

The jury was sent home last Tuesday and asked to return today (Tuesday) – but that changed when it became clear the legal arguments are set to continue for up to another week.

The trial continues and is expected to last six to eight weeks.
