A LARGE party will mark the 100th birthday of Dewsbury's market.

While there won't be a telegram from the Queen, the celebrations will be extra-special.

The unveiling of a commemorative plaque will launch the party.

Three hundred regular traders will be joined by stalls selling traditional food and drink on Wednesday, July 21, and Saturday, July 24.

The hall will be decorated with bunting and traders will be dressed in the high collars and simple costumes of the Edwardian era.

Two shire horses will take people for rides round the town centre, pulling an Edwardian omnibus loaned by Bradford Transport Museum.

Street entertainers, including fire eaters, buskers, jugglers and living statues, will add to the celebrations.

The sounds of music will be heard from a traditional street organ.

There will be plenty for the children, including a treasure hunt of old coins around the town centre, free gifts and competitions.

Old photos and newspapers will be on display at Dewsbury Library.

Dewsbury Minster plays host to a fringe event - a musical Edwardian Extravaganza - at 7.30pm on Friday, July 23.

The minster will be decorated to conjure up a bygone era and the building will be filled with the sounds of music hall numbers and solo performances from the turn of the 20th century.

The evening will finish with a rousing rendition of songs from the Last Night of the Proms.
