TRADERS are being encouraged to move into the newly-refurbished Cleckheaton Market Arcade.

The lower half of the building was gutted by fire three three years ago.

But the final touches are now being put to the refurbished building and a grand reopening is planned for May.

Kirklees markets manager Bill Wigham said: "Despite the damage caused by the fire, we have succeeded in maintaining a small market in the top arcade.

"With the work now nearing completion we are looking forward to operating at full capacity and providing a valuable service to the local community."

Clr Andrew Pinnock, Cabinet member for markets, said: "I welcome the fact that Cleckheaton market will soon be able to regain its place with the other markets in our portfolio.

"It will be contributing to the vitality of our town centre and will add to the range of retailers available to those shopping in Cleckheaton."

The Market Arcade will house 23 stalls. Trading hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday with half day closing each Wednesday.

The fire started at about 5pm on January 18, 2002. Despite the damage, the top arcade was refurbished to relocate traders by May of that year.

The expected completion date of the full Market Arcade is later next month.
