A MARKET will stay open during repairs, despite earlier fears.

Council chiefs said they would be able to keep Dewsbury Market in operation when work begins early next year.

The pledge came from Kirklees Council deputy leader Clr Ken Sims.

Repairs are required to beams and columns where rainwater has caused corrosion.

The work will begin early in the new year and last for several months.

A major refurbishment of the market hall will be carried out at the same time.

Clr Sims said: "The repairs will give the market building a new start and let it stand proud for the next 50 years."

The work is expected to last several months.
