ONE hundred and twenty-five houses in Marsden are without gas after water got into a pipe last night.

Northern Gas Networks staff were working today to locate the source of the ingress and the Mechanics Institute was opened as an emergency centre to enable residents to get a hot drink if they wish.

The Institute was also being used as an informal HQ for Networks' planners and council staff to ensure vulnerable people including one woman, a 90-year-old Alzheimer's sufferer, were cared for.

One resident of a  flats complex on Carrs Road, Brian Broadley, showed his community spirit by checking on less able residents to make sure they were all right.

And mayor Clr David Ridgway, who represents Marsden, popped in to the Institute this morning to check on the progress being made in finding a solution.

A spokeswoman from Northern Gas Networks said: "Our engineers have found the leak and are reconnecting vulnerable customers to the gas supply this afternoon.

"They will be working around the clock to get the remaining customers reconnected as soon as possible."
