COUNCILLORS will decide next week whether to help fund two village festivals.

Organisers of Slaithwaite Moonraking and Marsden Jazz Festival have each asked Kirklees Council for support.

The council’s Valleys Committee will decide on Thursday whether to commit more than £5,000 to the Colne Valley events.

Slaithwaite Moonraking has requested £2,950 to help pensioners teach young people felting, knitting, crocheting, weaving and dyeing.

The 12 weekly sessions would fit in with the wool theme of this year’s festival.

Meanwhile, Marsden Jazz Festival has asked the committee to provide £2,500 for publicity.

The event, which takes place every autumn, costs about £60,000 to stage. The Valleys Committee will decide on the funding at its meeting at Meltham Methodist Church at 7pm on Thursday.
