AN ELDERLY couple were terrorised in their own home – by a gang who attacked them by mistake.

Detectives believe the Holmfirth couple targeted by the masked thugs were the victims of a case of mistaken identity.

It is thought that the three-strong gang were after another target.

Now police are appealing for anyone who has any information about the attack to come forward.

The raiders forced the 81-year-old man out of his bed and made him stand helplessly as they searched through the pair’s belongings.

His 61-year-old wife was also trapped in the front room while the men carried out the burglary.

Their horrific ordeal happened at the couple’s home in Moorlands, Scholes, at 9.15pm on Saturday, February 25. But police revealed details only yesterday as they appealed for information.

The suspects are thought to have spent several minutes in the couple’s home before fleeing with a wristwatch.

It is unclear if they made off on foot or had a vehicle.

The elderly couple, who have not been named, were unharmed during the incident, but were left very shaken by their ordeal.

Police are now hunting the thugs and are appealing for anyone who may have seen the men acting suspiciously in the area to contact them.

One line of enquiry in the incident is a case of mistaken identity.

The suspects were described as three white men wearing dark clothing and face coverings.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At around 9.15pm on February 25 three masked men broke into the house on Moorlands through an unlocked front door.

“A 67-year old woman and an 81-year old man were in the house at the time.”

They appealed to anyone with information to contact Det Con Shaun Lewis at Huddersfield CID via 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
