A RAIDER stole a large amount of cash at a supermarket.
He attacked a security guard outside the Co-op store on Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, at 8.40am yesterday morning.
The guard, who was taking cash from the store to a security van, was sprayed in the face with some kind of substance.
The robber then stole a canister containing the cash.
He made off on foot towards the Lidl store on Hurst Lane, then down in the direction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal.
The guard was given medical treatment at the scene, but did not need hospital treatment.
He was left shocked by the attack.
Police have appealed for anyone who saw the raider fleeing to contact them.
They think he may have staked out the store in the days leading up to the robbery.
The thief is about 6ft tall and wore blue jeans, a black jacket and white trainers.
His black woollen hat was pulled down over the top half of his face and a black scarf was tied round the lower half.
Det Sgt Jane Taylor, of Dewsbury CID, said: "We would be interested in talking to anyone - perhaps people on their way to school or work - who was passing nearby and may have witnessed something.
"We are also keen to speak to people who were around the canal and also anyone on Huddersfield Road," she added.
"It may be that the man was in the area a day or so before the incident, so we would also ask people to cast their minds back - particularly to Monday - to see if they can recall anyone acting suspiciously," said Det Sgt Taylor.
Anyone with information should phone Dewsbury CID on 01924 431085.
