A TALENTED young apprentice has flown out to Japan with the aim of coming back an international championship winner.

Matthew Lander, 19, an engineer who works for Crowther & Shaw in Huddersfield, is among a number of British apprentices working in trades and crafts looking to come home victorious at the World Skills Competition.

The event is being held in the city of Shizuoka, in the foothills of Mount Fuji.

The competitors, all under the age of 23, will compete in categories including Beauty Therapy, painting and decorating, web design, bricklaying and engineering.

Around 200,000 spectators are expected to attend, where Matthew will be taking part in the refrigeration event.

Matthew said: “I am very proud to be representing the UK in this category and think it will be a great opportunity for my career. In the future I hope that it will be my name that everybody in the industry has heard of and wants to work with.”

World Skills is held every two years, where 49 member countries compete in 40 different vocational skills.
