G4 have hit the number one spot in the charts with their first album.

The all-male vocal quartet features former Huddersfield university music student Matt Stiff.

The group cracked open champagne when they returned to London's Covent Garden as news broke last night. Covent Garden was where they started out busking on the streets.

The boys, wearing identical suits, thrilled a crowd of on-lookers with a rendition of My Way followed by a classical number - although they were only thrown 2p for their efforts.

But Matt, Jon Ansell, Michael Christie and Ben Thapa are unlikely to be counting the pennies now their efforts have gained album chart success.

The four singers caught the imagination of millions of viewers last year when they appeared on ITV's the X Factor show with their operatic versions of rock and pop classics.

Since the album was released last Monday, the boys have been making a whistlestop tour of stores across the country. A spokesman said:

"The group have visited Edinburgh, Bristol and Birmingham and have been literally overwhelmed by thousands of fans."

G4 perform on next Friday's Top Of The Pops and their double A-side single Bohemian Rhapsody/Everybody Hurts is released on March 14.
