THE Mayor of Kirklees’ car was parked illegally in front of hundreds of people during a religious festival yesterday.

The black Volvo S80 was left on double yellow lines outside Springwood Sikh Temple at Prospect Street as a crowd gathered to celebrate Vaisakhi.

Mayor of Kirklees Clr Andrew Palfreeman attended the annual Sikh new year celebrations, giving a short speech in the temple car park.

His car – with the official registration MVH1 – was left on double yellow lines just outside the main gate.

The vehicle had been parked with two wheels on the pavement – also a traffic offence – and was outside the temple from at least 12.20pm to 1pm.

Prospect Street is narrow and a coach carrying worshippers to the temple was only able to make it down the road because no motorist had parked on double yellow lines opposite the mayor’s car.

Last week the Examiner revealed that Kirklees is spending £5,900 a year insuring the two black Volvo S80s used by the mayor.

For non-mayoral use, insurance for such a car is normally available commercially for around £930.
