THE new Mayor of Kirklees Clr Martyn Bolt is hoping ticket sales for an annual charity event go quackers.
Clr Bolt yesterday bought the first ticket for the Holmfirth Duck Race .
And he hopes hundreds of people will follow his lead.
This year’s race marks the 30th anniversary of what has become a quirky annual tradition.
Thousands of yellow rubber ducks are launched into the River Holme every year and the one which reaches the finish line first wins its owner £1,000.
This year’s landmark race takes place on July 7.
The event, organised by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table, raises about £10,000 each year.
The main charity this year will be the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield which offers practical help and support to families in crisis.
Founder of the duck race, Huddersfield solicitor Jeff Woodward, will launch the ducks on their anniversary plunge.
Tickets will be sold on the streets of Holmfirth in the next few weeks.
Details will be posted on the race’s Facebook group www.facebook.com/HolmfirthDuckRace or on Twitter at www.twitter.com/TheDuckRace.
Corporate tickets at £25 each offer a first prize of six bottles of champagne.
