SIKHS in Huddersfield chose a special day to lay the foundation stone for a new development.

The Mayor of Kirklees Clr David Ridgway was invited to perform the ceremony on the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikh religion.

Clr Ridgway joined worshippers at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Prospect Street, Springwood.

He wore a scarf on his head out of respect.

The temple, built in 1975, has 2,000 worshippers and is open every day.

Funding has been secured for exterior improvements which include a new car park, perimeter fencing, railings and gates.

The foundation stone for the parking area was laid by Clr Ridgway.

Guru’s birthday, also called Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, is celebrated on the day of the full moon in November.
