The Bells of St Mary’s in Mirfield have fallen silent so they can be renovated and recast for a fresh sound.

The 10 bells were lowered from the church tower during a skillful operation earlier this week and were today loaded onto a lorry.

They will be taken to Taylor’s Foundry, Loughborough, where the largest four will then be retuned.

The other six will be melted down and then recast as new bells using a process which has not changed for centuries.
