THE publishers of the Huddersfield Examiner have announced a series of measures to address the general slowdown in advertising markets.

In October, Trinity Mirror North West began a review of resources and expenditure, with the objective of reducing its operational cost base in the region while maintaining the high quality of its products.

The review was initiated in light of poor trading conditions this year and their negative impact upon a number of key advertising categories.

The company is concentrating on actions that will improve the efficiency of the business and implementing technology improvements to bring about change.

Structures will be altered to reflect market changes, with strategic objectives prioritised to drive forward future growth while protecting current profits.

The measures to be taken following the review include a redundancy programme that will reduce the company's approximately 1,800-strong workforce in the North West, North Wales and West Yorkshire by 75. In addition, some vacancies will not be filled.

Managerial and non-managerial posts will be affected, with restructuring in some departments. Some new roles will be created and recruitment will begin for a number of vacant posts that have been frozen.

The company believes a significant proportion of the required staff reductions will be met through non-replacement and voluntary redundancy, but says that at this stage compulsory redundancies cannot be ruled out.

A staff consultation process has started and will continue until mid-January.
