A mechanic, showing off in a customer’s car to two friends, became involved in a five mile police chase, a court heard.

The Audi RS4 had been brought to Mohammed Ahmed for some repair work but on the evening of April 24 he was spotted in it driving at around 80mph in a 30mph limit in Leeds Road, Huddersfield.

Officers caught up to him at traffic lights which were at red but as they did Ahmed drove off again at speed reaching 70mph in a 40mph limit, Jonathan Sharp prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court.

At the junction with the A644 Wakefield Road the lights were again on red and other vehicles were waiting but he drove on to the wrong side of the road past them and through the lights causing oncoming vehicles to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

He then turned into Far Common Road, Mirfield which was narrower where he accelerated up to 85mph and was still over the speed limit when he approached the roundabout at Church Road, Roberttown. The Audi then went through an area of speed bumps but the police car was unable to continue following.

However the police helicopter had been called in and could see the vehicle had pulled up in a side street and the passengers ran off.

James Gelsthorpe told the court in mitigation for Ahmed that he had only started a car repair business in Batley in April after working in some else’s body shop. He accepted because he had not yet obtained business insurance for driving vehicles, that he should not have been behind the wheel.

He had two people in the car with him for advice on what was wrong with it but he accepted he began showing off to them. When the police tried to stop him he panicked.

Ahmed, 24 of Firthcliffe Parade, Liversedge admitted aggravated vehicle taking and having no insurance.

He was sentenced to nine months in prison suspended for two years with 200 hours unpaid work, a low level activity programme and disqualified for 18 months.
