A FLOCKTON pensioner is celebrating a lifelong commitment to his church.

Wilman Rhodes has been presented with an engraved medal from The Royal School of Church Music to celebrate 66 years of singing with St James's Church Choir.

Wilman, 74, joined in 1940 and is delighted to have had all his hard work and efforts recognised in such a manner.

The presentation was made by Angela Griffith and the Vicar of Flockton, the Rev Christine Bullimore.

She expressed her appreciation to Mr Rhodes for so many years of commitment.

Mr Rhodes, pictured with his award, has lived all his life in Flockton. He became a choirboy at the age of eight and has never looked back.

He said: "We used to perform in very large choirs, but now there is just myself and two or three other ladies.

The small choir now takes part in one service a week, with a regular group of people turning up to enjoy their voices.

Mr Rhodes also likes to take part in concerts in the church when he gets the chance.

He said: "I still enjoy singing and will keep plodding on with it for as long as I can."
