A COUPLE who met at a dance have celebrated their golden wedding.

Derek and Kathleen Baldry met at the former Cambridge Road Baths in Huddersfield.

They married at Woodhouse Church, Fartown.

They couple first lived at Calton Street, Hillhouse, and later at Ripon Avenue, Fartown.

After 22 years they moved to the Newsome area, living at Chestnut Close and Taylor Hill Road before settling at Armitage Street, Primrose Hill, where they live now.

Mr Baldry was a gas fitter for the old Huddersfield Corporation for 22 years.

He then went to work in Bradford as a phone engineer for the GPO, now BT.

He then worked with disabled people as a volunteer for two years before getting a job at Hartley Manor old people’s home in Bradley for seven years.

He now works through the Deanery Project as an escort to the elderly.

Mrs Baldry worked as a weaver for more than 10 years for Crowther and Nicholsons at Ashbrow, Sheepridge.

She gave up work to have the couple’s three children. They also have four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs Baldry was a cleaner at the former Ramsden Street health clinic and then a waitress. She returned to weaving at Taylor and Littlewoods Mill, Newsome.
