A Holme Valley Primary school is counting the cost after thieves broke in and escaped with five laptops.

The burglary happened at Meltham CE Primary School around 9pm on Saturday at the school on Holmfirth Road.

Headteacher Alex Beaumont said: “Our caretaker was alerted on Saturday and discovered our Year 5/6 classroom door had been smashed.

“The bottom glass panel had been smashed with a brick. They had smashed the padlocks on the laptop trolley and stole five in total.

“We are disappointed and ultimately we will now have to replace the items to ensure our Year Five pupils are not disadvantaged.”

And it has been a bad start to the last week of term all round after a bout of sore throats and sickness bug has caused around 10% of the pupils to be off school.

Mr Beaumont added: “We’ve had 43 pupils absent today (Monday). It’s particularly a shame because it’s our Nativity play today and for pupils and parents to miss their first one is disappointing. We had three kings in rehearsals for the nativity but sadly we’re down to one on the day!”

Police are investigating the burglary and anyone with information should contact police on 101.
