A village is swinging into action ahead of a weekend of forties fun.

Meltham Memories returns this weekend – July 4-5 – with a programme of events sky high.

For the first time lucky visitors will get a bird’s eye view of Meltham with flights over the Holme Valley a major feature.

And all the tickets have sold for the Battle of Meltham Memorial Flight, with six flights scheduled for the day.

But there’s still plenty of other events for visitors, the official opening is at 10am on Saturday with the raising of the flag at the Waggon and Horses.

Many thousands of people are expected to make their way into the village.

The main procession gets underway on Saturday at 12.30pm with a military parade – Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band will play as military vehicles parade through the streets.

Throughout the day there will be stalls and entertainment in the village, with a vintage market in the Church Hall and ale festival nearby.

On Saturday night the Church Hall also hosts a victory ball with jive lessons.

Then on Sunday the day starts with a church service at St Bartholomew’s Church at 10.30am.

There will be a parade of vintage cars in the school grounds, as well as World War II re-enactments, and an afternoon tea at the school.

Organisers are hopeful of an RAF fly-past – weather permitting – and the 40s fun ends with a charity auction at 7.30pm at the Liberal Club.
