A village will swing into action and turn back the clock to celebrate 1940s style.

Meltham is gearing up for its ever-popular Meltham Memories wartime weekend which takes place between Friday, July 4 and Sunday, July 6.

As it’s the same weekend as the Tour de France Grand Depart, Meltham Memories will focus its activities on the Friday and Saturday so residents and visitors can enjoy both.

Pam Cox, vice-chair of the organising committee, said: “Looking back to the 1940s strikes a chord throughout generations – school children are learning about it and the older generation may have experience of the end of it or be impacted by it.

“It resonates with a lot of people.

“Meltham also has a proud connection with the Yorkshire Regiment so it allows us to celebrate all they have done and brings people together.

“It’s been running six years now and is an amazing weekend, great for the people of the village and visitors – last year we had more than 10,000 people and this year we hope we’ll have more with people camping nearby for the Tour de France.”

Meltham Memories kicks-off on Friday July 4 with a themed Afternoon Tea in Meltham Church Hall between 2pm and 4pm.

From 7.30pm Marina Mae will perform in the Waggon and Horses, while the Kirklees Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform in Meltham Church Hall – tickets are £6.

Saturday July 5 will be the main event day. A traditional opening ceremony takes place at 10am at the Waggon and Horses followed by a military parade through the village at 12.30pm with Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band, Huddersfield and District Veterans and period vehicles.

At 1.30pm there will be a children’s choir singing in the grounds of Meltham C of E School, followed by a mock battle with an Allies vs German military re-enactment at 2.30pm.

Saturday evening will see a performance at the church hall by the Greater Manchester Police Big Band – giving people a great opportunity to dance the night away to swing-era classics. Tickets are £7.50.

Other events include food and drink stalls, jive and swing dances, wartime memorabilia and the presence of army veterans.

Sunday will see the traditional church service held at St Bartholomew’s Church.

Most of the events are free to attend but tickets for the two evening concerts are available from Cafe 33, the Waggon & Horses, Meltham Crossroads Charity Shop or Flowerbox or Pam on 01484 521760.
