A RUGBY game played in memory of a man killed in a road accident was played after the original venue was shut due to a suspicious death.

The body of 18-year-old Robert Broadbent was found in a car park near the Fitness First gym at the Lockwood Park sports complex, which is also home to Huddersfield Rugby Union Club.

As a result the entire 26-acre site was sealed off by police and two Huddersfield University Old Boys games in memory of 27-year-old Alex Prosser were cancelled.

But the YMCA Rugby Union Club at Salendine Nook stepped in to help and one of the matches went ahead there.

Alex was killed in a motorcycle accident on Meltham Road in Lockwood in September, 2005.

The games’ organiser, Hugh Dobie, said: “It was very kind for the YMCA to help us at such short notice. We are looking to turn the memorial matches into charity games.’’

Alex played with the university’s first team while studying for a degree in modern history between 1996 and 1999.
