NEW lights are to be switched on at a Brighouse war memorial.

The ceremony takes place at 6pm next Thursday, after major renovations at the Bailiff Bridge site.

All the original trustees had dead or moved away, so there was no-one to look after the memorial garden, a tribute to those who fell in the First World War.

As a result, it fell into disrepair.

But now it has been restored by volunteers working with Calderdale Council and local firms.

Brighouse company Small Building Services has agreed to meet the running costs of the lighting.

Clr Lorraine Stott, Calderdale Council's Cabinet member for community services, will switch on the new lights.

She said she was pleased with what had been achieved.

"The garden was badly neglected and a lot of anti-social behaviour was taking place in it," she added.
