KIRKLEES Council has promised to repair the damaged Birkby war memorial.

And the authority has repeated its promise to the descendant of a soldier remembered on the memorial.

Mr Derek Rathbone, of Wetherby, is a nephew of Alan Edward Foster, who was killed at Gallipoli while serving in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in 1915.

He was only 19 and had lived near the entrance to Norman Park - later to be the site of the memorial - with his parents, Ann and William Henry Foster.

Mr Rathbone said: "His mother lived to be 100, but was never able to accept his death.

"In the 1930s, his father would sit by the memorial every day. I now hold his medals and I can recall sitting with my grandfather in the park, by the memorial.

"I was very upset to read that the memorial had been violated in an appalling manner.

"But the council have given me their assurance that the memorial will be repaired and re-installed."
