Motorists have been left fuming after a lane of one of Huddersfield’s busiest roads was coned off – with little sign of work being carried out.
Drivers have complained of queues and congestion in Leeds Road near the John Smith’s Stadium.
Huddersfield-bound traffic backs up at peak times and the junction with Red Doles Lane is often snarled up.
Work by Northern Gas Networks stretches back to the end of the summer – but drivers say weeks have gone by with little or no sign of men at work.
Now a councillor is demanding to know why such a major road has been left at the mercy of the cones.
Mirfield Tory councillor Martyn Bolt, a one-time highways chief on Kirklees Council, said the roadworks were causing massive disruption to traffic – for no apparent reason.
“There have been works here since the summer and the two-lane stretch is down to single file and it seems there is no work going on.
“As far as I can see there’s no hole in the road so why can’t the cones and barriers be moved onto the footway?
“It may be that one arm of the utility company comes to dig the hole and another puts down or removes the barriers but this has been going on for weeks.
“I have asked why Kirklees Council can’t just go in and move the cones and get traffic flowing. It just seems like common sense to me.”
A driver caught up in the tailbacks said: “I work in Red Doles Lane and often need to turn right at the lights towards Huddersfield.
“The queues mean you just can’t get across. It’s a nightmare.”
A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said: “Engineers are carrying out essential repair work on an ageing metal gas main on the A62 Leeds Road to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area.
“In order to carry out this work safely and efficiently, it has been necessary to close one lane of traffic.”
Patrick Horton, network officer for Northern Gas Networks, added: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while we complete this essential work.
“We know that no one likes roadworks and our engineers are working hard to complete the work as soon as possible to minimise any disruption caused.”
