A  Primrose Hill teenager assaulted a taxi driver and kicked his car in a row over a mobile phone left on the back seat.

Michael Curtis was so drunk that he was unable to remember much of the incident in the early hours of January 25.

He pleaded guilty to charges of common assault and criminal damage at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that the victim was Avais Iqbal.

Between 2.40am and 3.40am Mr Iqbal picked up a fare in Berry Brow.

He then took the passengers, including Curtis, his girlfriend and another male, to an address in Birstall.

Mr Iqbal dropped off the group on Low Wood Lane, magistrates were told.

Mr Bozman said: “A mobile was left on the back seat.

“It seems in the course of collecting it Mr Curtis, having retrieved the mobile, hit Mr Iqbal in the head.”

Magistrates heard that there was a further confrontation involving the other male.

Mr Bozman said that Mr Iqbal defended himself, knocking the man to the floor before getting into his car to drive away.

As he did so 19-year-old Curtis kicked one of the headlights, causing more than £300 worth of damage.

In mitigation Amjid Mahmood said that his client, of Lawton Street, was drunk at the time.

He said: “He doesn’t recall striking the complainant or damaging the headlight.

“He was too drunk to realise what he was doing.

“Mr Curtis is very apologetic about his actions and the distress he would have caused the complainant.”

Magistrates ordered a full report on the student before sentencing him.

This will take place on April 29 and he was granted unconditional bail.
