GRASS in fields in Longwood caught fire during the midday heat on Saturday.

Firefighters from Huddersfield station were called to tackle the blaze after a passer-by spotted smoke and raised the alarm. It happened between Longwood Edge and Longwood Gate.

The cause is not known, but fire crews say it’s possible the heat combined with rubbish or a thrown cigarette could be to blame.

It happened at noon when the temperature in the town reached a record high for October at 28°C.
